How Soon is Too Soon?

How soon is too soon to send out save the date cards? Our wedding is in a little over two years and I was thinking about sending them out on the two year mark, then a reminder at one year, and then the invites. Over half of the guest list is traveling over 2,000 miles, so I feel like I have to give them advanced notice.
